ABOUT WARD 5A
The nurses of 5A are dedicated to providing the optimum standard of care to patients. The professional nurse is in the best position to monitor patient care by maintaining a continual assessment of the patient and the care offered.

We provide individualised patient centred care to those people who require elective or emergency surgical intervention or support. Ward 5A is a dynamic 32 bed surgical ward specialising in upper gastrointestinal, colorectal, urological and general surgeries.

We believe that the individual has the right to be informed, and encouraged to participate in their own care as this provides them with the best opportunity for maximum recovery.

We believe the care of patients is a multi-disciplinary effort involving medical, nursing, allied health and community services personnel as required. Daily multi-disciplinary meetings are held to discuss patient care management, rehabilitation goals, education and discharge planning.

Objectives
1. The nurse will use appropriate knowledge and clinical skills to assist clients to meet their needs, overcome health problems, and perform activities of daily living.
2. The nurse will establish a rapport with the patient by providing an independent, communicative and informative environment.
3. Nurses will provide care within the guidelines and protocols of the Launceston General Hospital.
4. All staff will actively participate in unit activities and will be involved in programs to maintain and enhance their knowledge and skills.
5. Staff on 5A provide a communicative and informative atmosphere whereby all will be able to display confidence and utilise decision making skills while delivering quality patient care.
6. Staff will actively participate in on-going Quality Management and Occupational Health and Safety programs on the ward.
